Our Guest Speaker today is Pat Carmody, owner of Craiglee Winery. In 1960 Pat’s parents purchased what was then a sheep and cropping farm which you can see from Sunbury’s “gateway” From their Scottish heritage the property became Craiglee, “craig” meaning cliff and “lee” meaning shelter. Hence a home in the shelter of a cliff. In 1976, after researching wine growing and the history of wineries in Sunbury in particular, Pat replanted Shiraz grapes and then later other varieties such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Whilst Pat was originally a Secondary School teacher, after undertaking Viticulture studies he became a full time wine maker. Pat and his wife Dianne undertake most of the many daily tasks of the winery.
Craig’s wines are highly regarded by those in “the know”. Pat’s knowledge of Sunbury’s wine history and his skills, talent and knowledge of being a wine maker with a pursuit of excellence in his craft, make this Guest Speaker Program not to be missed.
In addition to Pat, our own, Rosa McCall, will be joining us after Pat’s talk. Rosa will be talking with us about the new publication “Searching for Sunbury’s Treasures”, which is now available, and has been researched and compiled by the Sunbury Family History and Heritage Society. For $15.00 you can obtain a copy on the day, or through registering your interest on UMAS, a copy can be ordered.
***Please note: Attendance at Guest Speakers requires that members must be fully vaccinated. Therefore new members of U3A Sunbury must bring their vaccination certificate to be sighted at this event, unless it has been sighted and registered previously.
