Tour of Overnewton Castle with Devonshire Tea afterwards. Overnewton Castle was built by William Taylor in 1849 surrounded by 13.000acres of rich grazing land near Keilor Township. Whilst it started as a single storey, bluestone colonial style homestead, upon his return from Scotland in 1859 he set about turning the small home into a Scottish Baronial Castle. After his death in 1905 the castle remained in the Taylor family until 1959 when it was sold. The new owner lived in the castle for 16 years but throughout that time it fell into disrepair.Later it was purchased by Dr Lesley Norton who restored it to it’s natural glory.
The castle is still owned by the Norton family and it is open to the public. The history tour takes in the beautiful, expansive grounds and the full gamut of the homestead from the ground floor right up to the former servants quarters complete with an old style panic room. Come and hear the history of the house and the families who lived there. If you are unable to get there please call Marlene on 97444848 and car pooling can be arranged.
