During the Second World War 66,000 women served in the armed forces and a further 3,000 in the Women’s Land Army, forever transforming the role of women in society and how future generations would view them.

With the absence of men, women were needed to take on many different roles during the war. They worked as builders, clerks, drivers, farm labourers, intelligence officers, mechanics, telegraphists and other roles. Many worked in factories that produced ammunition, aircraft, food supplies, uniforms and weapons.

This presentation explores the historical contributions of women from 1939 to 1945 and their enduring legacy for subsequent generations.

It will share stories of the women who served in the Australian Defence Force and on the home front, highlighting their sacrifices and contributions, not only to the war effort but for their families and the wider communities.

Catherine has a wealth of information, which has come as a result of her working as a volunteer at The Shrine but also from her passion to investigate the changing roles of women throughout history.

With societies changes in culture, values and circumstances, women have fought for their right to have recognition and to be seen as valued and contributing members of society.

Catherine is not only our Membership Officer but also a recognised U3A Sunbury Guest Speaker and Course Leader. But did you know her knowledge on Women’s Studies has also been acknowledged by our governing body U3A Victoria who has asked her if she would be a zoom Guest Speaker for all U3A members to commemorate both International Women’s and ANZAC Day.

Please don’t miss this presentation and join us in acknowledging the important achievements of women and their ever changing face in society.
