In our planning, we felt the guest speaker of August 15th, Stuart Duff, may have have raised your interest in the police and crime theme, hence the plans for this outing. Since our original notice, 20 members have registered for this Historical Crimes Tour but at this stage there are still five vacancies so hurry to be one of the lucky ones. Should you wish to take up one of the available places please phone Marlene on 9744 4848.
Therefore, on Thursday, August 22, we intend to take the Michael Shelton, Historical Crimes Walk in Melbourne from 10.30am. A very highly rated walk, it ranges over Spring St, Russell St, Lonsdale St and La Trobe St; it tells stories of gangsters, brothels and a lolly shop in the period from the 1850s to 1930. Cost of the tour – $20, payable on the day.
At 12.30pm we will move on to The Coopers Inn in Exhibition Street for a leisurely lunch, the meal at your own expense.
Then at 3.00pm we will walk – not too far – to the Old Melbourne Gaol – in Russell Street. The cost of this tour, payable now to Sunbury U3A (see below), is $10.50.
We will catch the 9.02 train from Sunbury to Parliament Station. Sorry about the early start – the next train is too late.
