Some of the members from our fabulous French classes (Beginners, Intermediate and Conversation) got together for a lovely lunch, bon appetit!

French Beginners & Intermediate – 2019 has started really well with 6 new people in Beginners, and another 6 starting Intermediate French recently.

French Beginners – Mondays 1-3pm at Bldg. 27, Rm 106. This group runs weekly during school terms, though not everyone can make it every week! We cover basic French grammar, pronunciation and phrases suitable for travellers – topics such as introductions, family, eating and drinking, getting about etc. Group Leader: Jill

In Beginners we have members who are starting completely from scratch through to some with school experience, since forgotten for the most part! We do lots of simple phrases and question and answer drills – greetings, what’s your name, do you have grandchildren, ordering a coffee etc – and have had a hilarious time trying to rote-learn numbers! The Beginners group uses the ’15 Minute French’ book – that is, you’re supposed to practise for 15 minutes a day, but I’m sure most are far too busy for that, enjoying other U3A activities. Not everyone can attend every Monday but try to pick up where they left off with help from others, and that’s OK.

French Intermediate – Mondays 3-4:30pm at Bldg. 27, Rm 106. Weekly group, building on grammar, phrases & vocabulary. Group Leader: Jill

In the new French Intermediate class, we started by listening to some song videos (e.g. the iconic & beautiful Françoise Hardy from the 60s) & will build on that over the coming weeks with drills on verbs in the various tenses, extended vocabulary & grammar. Everyone is enthusiastic & we try to have lots of fun!

French Conversation – Wednesdays 12:30-2:45pm at Bldg. 27. The French Conversation group is a venue to practise, once basics are learnt. We all help each other as no one has a monopoly in French grammar. We cover the various aspects of language, including grammar as we are always in need of revision and activities are varied and try to cater for different levels of expertise. This group has been meeting for more than 10 years and continues to be popular, led by our long-time volunteer guest tutor Jenny. Group Leader: Jenny
