June 4th – Guest Speaker – Jane Welsh: Cyber Policing

Jane is the Detective Superintendent in charge of the Finance and Cyber
Crime Division, Crime Command.  This Division is located at 313 Spencer Street, Melbourne. The units under her command are:

  •  E Crime Squad
  •  Fraud and Extortion Squad
  •  Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team
  •  Forensic Accountants
  •  Confiscation of Profits Squad

Jane’s policing career of more than thirty years includes operational policing and prosecuting; she has worked as a detective in metropolitan Crime Investigation Units, the Homicide Squad, and Professional Standards Command.

Jane’s interests include applied ethics and moral philosophy, most particularly their role in decision-making and critical thinking. Jane is a passionate lifelong learner. Her qualifications include Master of Leadership and Management (Policing) and Doctor of Policing and Security. Jane is currently completing a Master of Ethics and Legal Studies.

Jane will speak about some fundamental aspects of cyber crime and
technology enabled crime, their impact on our community and the attempts
by law enforcement locally and globally to combat this raising threat. 
She will also speak about some ways to avoid falling victim to online
scams. This information should be very helpful and will include what
to look out for and who to contact if you believe you have been
scammed.
