Sept 19th – Guest Speaker – Nigel Tarr – History of the English language after Saxon and Viking invasion.

As an ex language teacher, I have always been fascinated by Linguistics and the origins of speech and especially in the factors that affect change in grammatical convention, word usage and pronunciation.

This presentation will focus on the emergence of English as an Indo–European language and its subsequent development as a language of conquest in Britain, a language of subservience to Norman French and its revival through Chaucer and Shakespearian times to Empire and the spread of English speaking people through the world.

What does its future hold as a language of globalisation is interesting to speculate and is married to the very security and continuance of a world as we know it.
