Philosophy means “Love of Wisdom”. The search for wisdom is sometimes difficult.
The philosophy course offers a group discussion following an audio lecture / podcast on philosophical matters. It introduces one to the thinking of great philosophers up to the modern day and always keeps one eye focused on practise to help the group confront its own moral prejudices and hypocrisies.
Topics may include the Meaning of Life, Politics, Freedom, and Humanity. John Hall, the tutor, states that the study of philosophy is very beneficial for mental health, stimulating the brain, which assists in warding off diseases such as dementia. Each participant will be given the opportunity to contribute ideas to the discussion.
This often generates other topics of interest to the participant. e.g. A podcast might be about the topic of ‘Love’, which could open up discussion about the relationship of ‘Love and Hate’. Participants are also welcome to bring any ideas for topics of interest to the first session.
*** Please note this is a face-to-face course and only those members who have been fully vaccinated and have had their vaccination certificate sighted by U3A Sunbury can attend.
New members to Sunbury U3A must present their COVID vaccination certificate at the first class.
Note; COVID safety requirements for this course; masks must be worn, except when eating and drinking. 1.5sq. metre distance rule is required.

John Hall has a deep interest in philosophy and has studied it in depth since his retirement, through reading and involvement in philosophy groups. He started and, very successfully, led the Sunbury U3A and the Riddells Creek philosophy groups in 2019. John’s career includes; Director of Pharmacy at Bathurst Base Hospital, Associate Professor, lecturing in Pharmacology at Charles Sturt University and proprietor of a number of pharmacies.
