Today we are joined by Senior Constable Kim McKeown of the Northwest Metro Police Pro-active Unit. Kim is stationed here at the Sunbury Police Station.
Kim will be talking not only about her role within the unit, but also specifically about Elder Abuse and how the police can help support elderly survivors of this abuse. As with all abuse, elder abuse gets hidden in the community due to fear or shame. Elder abuse constitutes a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.
It can take many forms, physical, sexual, emotional, financial, lack of independence, isolation, not respecting older persons rights. It can occur in the elderly persons home, a family home, in the community or an institution.
Kim will talk about specific cases and how the police can intervene and get legal support, assistance and referral and will discuss how you can help if you witness elder abuse and how you too can get support.
Come and join us to listen to, and discuss all aspects of this important topic.
***Note this event is only open to those members who have been fully vaccinated as this is a requirement of not only U3A Sunbury but also The Sunbury Social Club where the event will be taking place.
