The Lake District has been Adrian’s home for 16 years.

This presentation describes its picturesque qualities and some of the characteristics and activities which enabled it to be awarded World Heritage in 2017. To be awarded World Heritage status is a great privilege and it brings with it international recognition.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the preservation of cultural and natural heritage considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

The English Lake District is one of 1000 sites around the world. Located in NW England, the Lake District is a mountainous area, whose valleys have been modelled by glaciers in the Ice Age and subsequently shaped by an agro-pastoral land-use system characterised fields enclosed by walls.

The combined work of nature and human activity has produced a harmonious landscape. Grand houses, gardens and parks have been purposely created to enhance the landscapes beauty.
The cultural and natural heritage of the Lake District has long been recognised.

The landscape was appreciated from the 18th century onwards by artists such as William Gilpin, poet William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter who purchased farms in the area to preserve the beautiful landscape, which in 1951 was designated as a National Park.
