Science for the Curious

Why is it so ?

A series of sessions and lectures on various interesting science topics, look below for details and links to the actual individual module

Course Leaders are Gillian Hume and Kaye Coates

You might have never taken a science course in your life, but you are fascinated by how Science explains our lives, so this course is for you!. You do not need a background in science, just a keen interest in finding out how things work. Luckily we can do it by Zoom to start. We have designed it as a series of blocks, so you can join in to the sessions that interest you, and so that the course can cover a wide range of topics. The blocks will be 1 hour per week for 5 weeks, so two per term. The timeslot is Wednesday 11am to noon. The first block is called Blood for Beginners, starting on July 15th and led by Kaye Coates.

Blood for Beginners will include: what blood does; what are the components of blood; what happens when things go wrong; and how to decipher blood tests. It will have an interactive approach with lots of time for questions and answers. Kaye has a degree in Medical Laboratory Science, majoring in haematology.

We welcome suggestions for future blocks in Science for the Curious. Some of the ideas we have completed:

  • The Ins and Outs of Breathing;
  • Physics – The Mechanics of Things;
  • Everyday Chemistry;
  • Looking at the Sky;
  • A Physiotherapist Explains
